My biggest dream is to teach English at a university. I want to be a professor and teaching has been a dream for my entire life.

However, my mom tells me that English limits my career/job choices. I can't do as many things as I would be able to through, for i.e., Business.

I know that I should follow my heart. I just want to hear some logical/factual answers from people with experience.

Does English limit choices of careers? Is it reasonable? What is something that I could major in that is similar to English (I am very creative and I love teaching and writing)?

I would appreciate any help.

Thank you!

Hmm... I've been told that English, as well as anything in the Humanities area, limits your choices for a career. It just doesn't have as big of an influence as other choices have.

However, if this is something that you want to do, do it! I would recommend that you took English Education and then minored in something else (it'd be good to get some math and science in). That way, you have a teacher's certificate + English + math and science.

Journalism, Modern Literature (or Literature), etc., are other great choices.

Best of luck in finding what is best for you!!!

If you really love teaching and writing, you could get an Education degree after your Arts degree.

anything in humanities is very limited as far as job prospect goes. but if you love to teach, you can get a teacher's certification and be a teacher while you're working on your Ph.D. you can also get into journalism if you're interested in that.
