In an essay, article, or book, an introduction is a beginning section which states the purpose and goals of the following writing. This generally followed by the body and conclusion, and may be preceded by an abstract.
The introduction describes the scope of the document. It gives the brief explanation or summary of the document. The readers can have an idea about the following text before they actually start reading it.
Keeping the concept of introduction same, different documents have different style to introduce the written text. For example, when you introduce a Functional Specification, the introduction consists of information what the whole document has to explain. If a Userguide is written, the introduction is about the product. If you go for a report, the introduction will tell you a summary about the report contents.

I can't exactly "show" you one...but I was always good at writing the introductions to essays, because I always got the most points on that part...so do this:
1) Say the title and author of the book
2) Give the main situation or conflict including the main characters
3) Talk a little about what you're essay is going to be about, but don't say "In this essay, I will talk about..."
4) Say a thesis that lists all the points which you will talk about
Remember, you have to pretend like you are writing it for someone that has never read the book before, so make it fun!
Good luck! ^_^

An introduction is the first paragraph of the essay. It tells the reader what topic you are going to be writing about and what your main point will be.
Most English teachers recommend starting your essay with a really general statement about life or humankind, then making the connection to your specific topic.
Here's an example from an essay about school uniforms:
"Violence, teasing and bullying are huge problems in high schools today. They endanger the students' education and safety. How can schools stop students from being cruel to one another? One possible step in that direction might be school uniforms. Although most students would probably prefer not to wear them, school uniforms could have a positive impact on students' education. Schools should require students to wear uniforms, in order to promote safety and discourage bullying behavior."
Notice that the introduction starts with a general statement about schools. Then it starts to make a connection to the topic of the essay: uniforms. Finally, the last sentence states the author's main argument: that schools should require uniforms. Now you know exactly what this essay is going to be about!

Basically it is your opening statement leading up to your thesis-sort of breaking the ice before you get to your point(s)
