I'm not familiar with the local hard wood trees in Maine, but I would guess oak. In the 1850's, they probably would have been using what was most readily available in the local area. Find out what was most common in the home's area at that time and chances are that is your timber.

Mostly pine, a little oak. They also used larch, which is a pine also.
