I need more information? How long has she had this diarrhea? What color is it? Is the odor normal? You might try the BRAT diet, which is recommended by most doctors: give clear liquids only for 24 hours, then gradually start offering bananas, rice, applesauce, and toast. Try Immodium over the counter medication, unless it is ruled out by her doctor. If these measures do not help, please contact her doctor, because she may have a parasite, or an ileus, which is a medical term for a blocked intestine. This can be very serious if this is the case. Bowel obstruction means digested food becomes lodged high in the intestine, with only liquid stool being able to slip around it. If not caught and corrected in time, the bowel could tear and the contents spill out into the abdominal cavity, causing extreme pain, and deadly infection, even gangrene. I have had an ileus, so I know what I am talking about. I am a registered nurse and have dealt with this often in my job.

The diarrhea can be caused by numerous things. Is she on antibiotics? Has her diet changed? What does the stool look like (I know, gross)? Does it have blood in it or does it look like black tar? It is hard to say what you should do because there can be so many factors, but a diet of rice and bananas may help initially as long as she is not allergic to these items or she is on a special diet that restricts them. Be sure to replace the fluid she has lost with Gatorade or anyother electrolyte balancing formula that is acceptable within her diet. Stay away from fruits like prunes and roughage like lettuce. As always, seek the advise of a physician. There are many over the counter anti-diarrhea medications that your local pharmacist could recommend. Good luck. Not liable.

It sounds like grandma needs a stool specimen to the lab to find out why such diarrhea. Sometimes diet is not the problem.

how long its been, the frequency, blood? smells really bad?
u dont decide to give her food to stop it until u know wht's causing it, at that age, they are very prone to be constipated and then u have another problem. there's a toxin that causes diarrhea...called clostridium difficil, u want to make sure she doesnt have it....before u even give antidiarrheal medications

Call her doctor and see what can be done to stop the diarrhea. If she has been having diarrhea then you need to contact a physician to see what she can take - and make sure she isn't dehydrating.

Brat diet:
B-bananas

A-applesauce
T-toast(dry is best)
Check with her Dr. to make sure she can eat these and that there isn't a serious problem causing it.
