Recently, I posted a survey and one of the questions asked what has been the worlds most catastrophic event, and many put that 9/11 was the one; many also put that when questioned as to what their countries' most influential occurrence was....Am I the only one who thinks that there have been more pressing historical happenings??!!! Probably not, but anyway, I would like to know what your opinion is on the matter...

IS 9/11 AMERICA'S MOST INFLUENTAL OCCURENCE? WHAT ABOUT THE MOST CATASTROPHIC EVENT IN THE WORLD??

Thank you.

In terms of lives lost, the single most catastrophic event in world history was Mao Zhedong's Cultural Revolution and the famine that accompanied it. No one knows exactly how many people died, and the communist government of China does not want the world to know. The most reliable estimates of outside historians put the number around 38 million deaths.
The reason why so many people think the attacks of 9/11/01 were so historically significant is that they have not studied history, and they cannot yet put 9/11 into its proper historical perspective. The same is true of the First and Second World Wars.

I agree with you. Unfortunately a lot of Americans seem to wear blinders when it comes to looking beyond their own borders. I wish this attitude would change--really I do.
