How is the old lady's withdrawal from prescription morphine before her death a symbol of killing a mockingbird?

hmm...i'm a college student...i'm reading To Kill a Mockingbird because someone on yahoo! answers recommended it to me (check my profile if you have to)...I don't get how that is a symbol of "killing a mockingbird" because that lady was awful to Jem and Scout...I can understand Boo Radley and Tom Robinson's case, but not this one...

Anyway,I don't think Mrs Dubose has anything to do with the theme 'to kill a mockingbird'.She is supposed to represent courage.Like Atticus said, true courage is when you know you are going to lose at the start, but continue anyway.

Mrs Dubose knew she was dying because of being so addicted to morphine, but continued living, and near the time of her death, she actually broke off from morphine(I think). So that is true courage. :)

It wasn't her withdrawal from morphine that was killing a mockingbird. It was the children's condemnation and hatred of her. Because she was mean, and cruel, the temptation was to write her off as an evil person - in essence "killing" her in their minds. However their father realized she was simply a "mockingbird" - helpless in her own way, singing her own song of life through her courage in conquering her dependance on morphine before she died.

Basically one of the themes that the book explores is whether people are good or whether they are evil. And Mrs Dubose is one of the characters that the author used to represent the author's view that good and bad characteristics can co-exist in a single person. While she is vile to the children, she possess certain good qualities too... like the courage to confront her death without the soothing comfort of morphine.
