Oh, Christopher Columbus - the evil of it all!
I say teach them what happened without all the "poor Indians" nonsense tacked on. Explain generally how the world worked at that time - and place ol' Chris in context. Don't make excuses for him or the Indians or anyone else. Just explain it in a manner that will not prejudice them as students as they move on to middle school.
Unfortunately, I'm not sure how possible such an approach is in this day and age. Most school districts have been successfully infiltrated by the far left-wing and everything that has ever happened in the history of the world has to have a political explanation attached to it. And not just any old political explanation will do - no, it's gotta be a political explanation that's fairly far-left.
So, with that crowd dictating what is in school books and how the teachers' colleges indoctrinate their students, I'm afraid ol' Chris isn't destined to be considered very highly if elementary school students are permitted to hear about him and his supposedly nefarious career.

Yes. Everyone should know the basic facts. Although we can only speculate about what would have Columbus done had he known the consequences of his discovery, to the native peoples of America.

Ok you people who say history doesnt matter, your full of crap, it does. And yes dont fill them full of crap then when they get to Highschool have it changed on them, they can handle the fact that Columbus did discover our country, not the first to, but he did do horrendous things to Natives, obviously they will say why do we celebrate him but, they will later learn that modern day and past americans dont really care what they did to natives, but they should also know that happened.

Of course. We must never lie to our youth. They could grow up to be like Christopher Columbus for all we know.

Boo Hoo!
They are already told what is important.
What happened to the natives really doesn't matter. The natives were steamrolled out of the way of an expanding Europe. I'm not saying "don't tell them", I'm saying it isn't important; it is just another fact.
