Never able to achieve the same level of success after puberty that her "I've Written a Letter to Daddy" stage routine had brought, Jane tried to sustain a film career based on her sister Blanche's fame. But being a miserable failure at that, she turned to drink and believed she had crippled her sister in an auto accident.
Now she spends her time rehearsing old musical numbers, curling her hair, caring for her sister and serving fresh baked rat for dinner.

Since the late, great Bette Davis WAS Baby Jane, the answer is clearly that she passed on. So, of course did Joan Crawford, Blanche, in the film and in real life. Talk about your powerhouse actors!! Can anyone think of actors today that could have brought those roles to such vivid life? (Yes, I know Meryl Streep could but then she can do anything brilliantly). Young people may not know that Davis and Crawford ruled the screen from the early 30s until their respective deaths. Crawford started as a dancer in vaudeville and made a couple of silent films before being cast in, I think, the first musical made with sound. Clearly, she was destined to be a straight actor and she did it all, including best actress for Mildred Pierce in 1945. Faye Dunaway did a crack up job as Crawford in the film, Mommie Dearest, which I believe was over the top in terms of allegations of abuse of her daughter. Crawford was just such a big star that she became a perfectionist in terms of her image and she put her children second and most likely did scream "No wire hangars!" and emotionally abuse her two adopted children. Doubt she knew she was doing it. Davis, whose daughter also wrote a tell all and had bad things to say, was also the cossumate movie star, bigger than life from beginning to end. Davis, if you see her hundred or so films made each one her own. Powerhouse! Absolutely could not take your eyes off of her. And her famous Bette Davis eyes were unique. Davis and Crawford demanded they be treated as the great stars they were and they worked all the time to earn it. I'm thinking of some of the temperamental no talents that young people think are stars today and how pathetic are their demands. Even Meryl Streep would conceded that Davis was perhaps the greatest of them all. Crawford wouldn't, of course, but then Joan Crawford was also an original, the likes of which we will never see again. Thanks for asking the question. Hope I have given some QA people an interest in checking out some of the great performances of these two stars. Oh how we have allowed our culture to cheapen.
