Yes, to have a good garage sale, you do need to know what you're doing:

1. Start off organized. Sort all of your items into categories (sort kids' clothes into boy/girl, infant, toddler, etc.). Evaluate every item, and throw away the stuff that is really junk.

2. Buy neon colored price tags at Walmart. Don't price too low, but don't price too high, either. I price everything as I sort.

3. Be ready to display. Boxes DON'T work for display. Get poles to hang things on; have tables, or sawhorses and plywood. Spread things out.

4. Advertise--run an ad in your paper or Shopper's Guide, but make it stand out. Write it in limerick form! Have colorful signs out on the day of your sale.

5. Have sacks ready for your buyers.

6. Have a cooler full of drinks to sell to shoppers.

7. Put a few attractive items out where they are easily seen, and then put many near the back, so shoppers will have to walk through. Label obscure items to shoppers know what they are.

Best of luck!

Knowitall has most of the basics covered. Further suggestions are: ADVERTISE! Also, put up directional signage that is unique to your sale, so people won't go to other sales by mistake. Have plenty of change on hand, but never let the money out of your sight.(fanny packs are good). If possible, have one person there who can keep an eye on things, and actively sell your stuff, while another just acts as the cash register. Be sure to price all your things IN ADVANCE of the sale, it will make everything far easier, as you wont have to be constantly distracted by having to answer the same questions over and over. I find that the 1/3 rule works best, that is, price everything 1/3 what it would cost new. It is a simple and effective place to start.

Whenever I do garage sales people will generally not stop if there isn't any furniture visible. For this simple reason I would recommend checking to see if you want to upgrade some old furniture.

Also, multi-family garage sales normally draw a larger, more diverse crowd.

Good Luck!

No, it's not a matter of life or death. Nonetheless, of primary importance is strategic placement of large-print signs with directional arrows on them (BIG & HUGE are good adjectives to include on your signs) A good garage sale implies that you have been successful at selling your clutter, so price it low and don't turn up your nose at low offers. The idea is to get rid of the stuff and make a few bucks at it. Also if it's cheap enough you can blow it off in one day instead of one week. When a major slow down occurs, post a 1/2-off sign. When things slow down again, post a FREE sign. And remember to include your earnings on your income tax returns.............................................................

I have "free" garage sales.... I advertise for people to bring a donation for the local human society in dog fod / cat food form. The next sale I have it for the local food shelf.

Bring the donation and everything is free ! I get rid of everything and do something nice too.

Don't sell stuff too cheap - you can always lower the price later in the day - but if it's something decent, price it at about 1/2 of it's retail price if it is in good condition. Best selling items are kid's toys, home decor, dishes, tools and yard implements.

Knowitall has good info. If a customer wants to 'haggle' for something....so be it. That is why you are having the sale --- to get rid of stuff.

most papers let you advertise free, and have your items clean, folded if this applies, and clearly priced. clothes should be located with like sizes, not a mix match. we do this, and have lots of success with just those things. oh, and also, we put some colored balloons on our mailbox. catches the eye and they see our sign in the yard when it is out. hope this helps.
