If you get one and have plans to have another you must get them @ the same time from the same litter otherwise they will kill each other. Also you will want same sex hamsters so you don't end up with a hamster colony.

My daughter has a hamster so, naturally, I am the one that cares for it.
It is a little bit of work, I'll tell you. The cage must be cleaned every week, without fail. Everything, the tray, the bars, the feeding dish and water bottle have to kept clean. Otherwise, it will start to smell.
Do not keep two hamsters in the same cage. These rodents are very territorial and will fight each other to the death.
The hamster must be hand trained and not just so you can play with it. If it needs a vet's care the doctor will need to handle it.
These animals are nocturnal so it is not a good idea to keep the cage too near the bed. It'll keep you awake with it's constant scurrying and gnawing.
No pet should be purchased without a full knowledge of it's care and feeding.
Learn all you can and maybe your mom will relent.

well, if you get on I'd go for the teddy bear hamster i have one and then it died like a gazillion years later! but then i got a dwarf hamster and it wasn't as exciting! but you want to make sure you don't over feed it and kill it like i did and find somewhere else other than by the side of you bed to keep it cause it will annoy you to death! but i think you should definatly get one!

hamster are great pets. i would not recommend a dwarf hamster for beginners. they can get a little bitey at times and they are not afraid of anything.
hamster are solitary creatures and if kept in a cage with one another can make one territorial.
i recommend the black european hamster. they will be a bit more expensive, but they have a sweet disposition and a very soft coat.
long haired and short haired hamsters are wonderful pets too. you just need to speed quality time with it and not to treat them meaningly. they will not hesitate to defend themselves. when scared they throw themselves on their back and bare their teeth.
do not try to pick them up while they are sleeping. people make that mistake the most. the hamster will bit. when they bit they bring blood.
scoop them up with both hands and gentley hold them close to your chest for balance and security. if they fell threatened or scared they will not hesitate to jump out of your hands. this situation can result in injury to hamster or death.
a hamster in the beginning will preceive your hand as an enemy. when you go to reach for you hamster place you hand within a respectable distance from the hamster and let them get aquinted with your smell. when he/she comes to trust you, slowly pet them and talk in a positive, gentle tone. then when you feel like the hamster trusts you, gentley scoop with both hands and bring to chest.
to help your hamster get used to your smell, place an old shirt you worn that day within the cage to let him/her sleep on do get used to your smell.

Please don't get a hamster just because your mates got one.
You will have the responsibility of feeding and cleaning the hamster. Just help look after your mates.
