How do you get mud out of jeans?

I had to work through some mud and there's a good 6 inches caked on my jeans. They're my favorite pair so I really want to make sure I do this right

Soak them overnight in cold water. That will take off the majority of the mud. Then wash them. For best results, soak them as soon as you get mud on them; the mud will pretty much disappear.

When the mud is dry, brush it off using a suede brush or similar (plastic, not wire). Once you've got rid of the excess mud, wash on cool wash (not on hot as the remaining mud will set). If you rub on a little washing-up liquid (for dishes) beforehand, they'll clean better.

Don't let the mud dry on your jeans. Hose them off outdoors. Then presoak them with a stain remover and toss them in the washer. Be sure the mud/stains are out before tossing them into the dryer.
