Unlike every other video game character, Mario is not a "cool guy" or a muscular action-hero guy or a cute animal mascot creature.
Mario is middle-aged, he looks somewhat overweight, and he's shorter than the princess he rescues, but he's still lovable and one of the most recognizable characters in the world, and that makes him the most unique and best character of all.

I would have to go with mario because he pretty much saved the video game home console market after atari screwed it all up so with out mario we wouldnt have Master Chief, Sam Fisher, sonic, and every other good character you can think of.

Duke Nukem. He's strong, he's got a ton of guns, has a customized '68 Harley, and owns his own bar/nightclub. Plus, he gets paid millions of $$ to kill aliens. He's also got endless one-liners.
The Master Chief, from Halo 1+2 is cool too. He's got awesome looking armor, cybernetically enhanced strength, speed, and agility, he can use any weapon or vehicle, and he's almost unstoppable.

Yeah Max Payne might be able to dodge bullets and stuff.But Solid Snake beats all odds in any situation, well so var anyway.He was genetically engineered to be inferior to his genetic twin in every way yet still he overcame the odds and proved himself superior towards his supposedly superior cloned twin Liquid Snake.

I have got to say the ice climbers for super smash brothers Melee
I can kill anyone with them the only downside is there triple jump isn't very good.
