I don't think other seeds (like beans) need actual contact with dirt.. they just need to stay moist

I think it probably needs the nutrients from the soil in order to sprout. Bean seeds already have needed nutrients packed within them so they are able to grow with just water.

You can start grass seeds in moist paper towels just like beans. Or let the bag of seed get wet like I did by mistake and have sod after 3 weeks.

probably because grass cant sprout out of water. it would die because of too much water. it needs a medium that can absorb the water.
