Columbus was the first person whose discovery of the Americas was widely recognized. The discovery of North America by Columbus resulted in the mass movement of Europeans to the New World, and all of the problems & benefits that resulted from that movement.
Leaf Ericson discoverd North America first, but nothing long term came of his discovery (since the only Viking Colony was wiped out by Native Americans and never resettled) and it was forgotten.

Columbus was a person that was acceptable in the view of a white predominated audience. There was no respect for those who founded and inhabited certain countries so their findings were stolen. Of course columbus was a great explorer who did discover new land but a biased audience assumed he had put his mark originally on places that were already marked or even inhabited by people seen as lesser folk

Leif Erickson, you are talking about. The Scandanavians were secretive about it. Kind of like a fisherman. If they find a good fishing hole, they often hide it.
Columbus celebrated it. Plus the Spanish gvt invested a lot of money in Columbus. They wanted to look smart and told everybody how great their investment panned out. Plus times were getting more modern and a new "world" was a good thing for the new mankind to challenge. Plus Italians (Columbus) and Spaniards are outgoing people. Scandanavians are on the quiet side.

We didnt' know about the norse discovery until later.
There's evidence of greek and roman visits to the US. Many egyptian mummies and even european bog bodies that have evidence of tobacco and coccaine use, all new world products.
Discoveries are usually credited when it changes things. For example, many technical discoveries happened in China first, but were never utilized.

I have no idea.
Personally, I'd like to celebrate National Viking Ancestors Day!!! That would be fun!!! Especially with parades of longboats and everybody wearing helmets with horns on them.
