I just got one (used w/ no box or info, it was free). What is a USB CD-Re Writer? I already have a cd writer built into my laptop,so am wondering what the heck you would use it for? Need any and all info about these things please. (on the device it says 24x10x40, if that helps)

its a normal Cd-Rewriter , which is connected to your computer , using the USB connection, just similar to the connection on any usb mini disk.

CD-RW means that you can use rewritable disks (RW) and recordable (CD-R) disks....

The difference is...Once you write to a CD-R (whether or not you use ALL of the 650-700mb) disk, you CANNOT write to it again. This makes the CD-R similar to a disk you get when you buy software.

A CD-RW disk means you can write to it, then add more files to it later, up to the capacity of the RW disk...You can also erase RW disks, and start over again with a (basically) blank disk....

The USB part means that you can plug this unit into ANY computer that has a USB port, which is convient when you have a laptop, meaning that you can do a disk (laptop) to disk (external) recording...For example, if a friend has a disk you want to copy TO DISK, you can now do that without having to copy the disk to your hard drive, then copying it to your (CD) disk... Another example is you can take this unit with you and copy a disk off of someone elses computer...

Another name for the drive you got is an EXTERNAL CD-RW.

If you have a built in CD-RW then the usb one is redundant. The USB CD-RW would be handy for anyone who's laptop lacks any CD burner.

If you wish to use it you will need to download the appropriate drivers look for the maker and model number on the chassis somewhere.

It's pretty much the same thing as your CD Writer, except it runs on a USB port. Note that if this doesn't support USB 2.0 (or if your computer doesn't have a USB 2.0 hub), it will probably be too slow to use for much.

It lets you burn CDs without having to install the device in the computer. It just uses a USB connection
