No, it's nowhere near the speed necessary to run XP at a satisfactory level. Processors can be more than ten times faster than that now, and have computers have more than 20x the harddrive space you have and nearly ten times the RAM.
Your computer is technically above the minimum requirements, but I doubt you'd have a good experience.
You can get a decent laptop for under $1000 now, just get a new one. Actually, I suggest you wait six months, when Windows Vista comes out, and get a new computer then.

I don't think so. Your computer seems to be a little bit slow on the RAM. You should have atleast 256 MB of RAM or 512. If I were you I would upgrade to Windows 2000, which it might support. But if there is a special software only for XP you really need, then you can still go with XP.

Actually, it would be much faster keeping it with 98. XP takes over 150+ mb of ram with few processes running. I would reccommend keeping it with 98 and downloading XP compatibility programs, if thats what you want that computer to do. Otherwise, look on www.craigslist.com or a local newspaper for an ad for a cheap desktop. You could probably get one for under $100.

No, installing XP on that machine will kill it as for as usefullness goes. If you want to upgrade to a modern operating system, save alot of cash, and still be able to use you're laptop, you should check out a flavor of the linux operating system. Linux can turn an old laptop which would normaly be useless with the unsupported windows 98 os, or crippled by XP, into a still slow, but managable and modern computer.
If you're interested check out http://www.linux.org/dist/ and pick the distribution that sounds right for you.

The Offical Sys Req's say
"PC with 300 megahertz (MHz) or higher processor clock speed recommended; 233-MHz minimum required;* Intel Pentium/Celeron family, AMD K6/Athlon/Duron family, or compatible processor recommended
128 megabytes (MB) of RAM or higher recommended (64 MB minimum supported; may limit performance and some features)
1.5 gigabyte (GB) of available hard disk space."
But sys req's are marketing tooks. The ACTUAL ones would be more like:
1 GHz processor
256 MB ram
5 GB space
That will make it run pretty smoothly. The quoted ones will run slowly.
With your system, you'd be lucky if you could get it installed.

It won't install with 96mb of ram the absolute minimum requirements are 128 MB ram, 300 mhz and 1.5 gigs of free space.
It will be very slow, take forever to load, and be subject to lock ups.

No it won't
You want at least a P3 but probably a P4. At least 256Mb of RAM but you want 512Mb. You are nowhere near that.
That system will choke.
