I'm 17, will be 18 in less than two months, and I'm unemployed. When I turn 18, I intend on leaving my parent's house (though I'm still in high school). I've considered just being homeless, because it doesn't bother me, but I would like to graduate from school, and being homeless may make it more difficult to get stuff done. So I want a small apartment (there are some one bedroom apartments in my town for $99/month). But I need income, and I don't think it would be fair to ask my parents for help. I've applied many places, but I don't really know what else I should do. Can anyone help me?

Please don't lecture me, as I really doubt you have anything new to say.

I'm asking what to do to get a job. Please answer the question, and stop trying to make assumptions about my character.

Of course it's my fault I can't get a job. That's why I'm asking if anyone has any advice for how to make myself more marketable! And so far I've gotten about two answers that actually address the question!

Some background info...
I live in a town of 18,000. I've never heard of our town having an employment office. I would work at a fast food restuarant, but they're 30-45 away walking, and riding a bike to that area of town isn't really possible. I can not drive because I don't have money and can't pay for a car or its insurance or fuel.

Places like supermarkets, restaurants, retail stores, drug stores, and libraries are usually willing to hire people still in school. It's smarter to return a completed application in person and ask to speak with a manager/person in charge. Even if they don't have something available immediately, they'll be more likely to remember you once something becomes available if they've talked with you in person.

Explain to them that you're interested in any employment that can give you work experience. Let them know you're able to start immediately. Let them know you're willing to work part time hours. Let them know you're happy to work nights and weekends. If you don't have other committments (sports, clubs, after-school activities) be sure they know that too. A manager might consider someone with more available time over a student whose busy schedule he or she continually needs to work around.

If you're unable to generate any employment leads, find something to do to work for yourself. Invest a few bucks in a heavy-duty rake and target houses whose yards need cleaned up. If you live someplace where it snows, you can switch to shoveling driveways in the winter. You'd be surprised what people will pay to have someone do a couple hours of outdoor work. Mowing lawns, cleaning out garages, weeding gardens...

Or if you're more of an indoor guy, find something to sell on Ebay.

Good luck to you.

P.S. -- Live with your parents until you finish high school, if you can stand it (even if you do find work). That way you can save as much money as possible and have it socked away if the time comes when you need it (and believe me, it will!).

The best way to get a job, is by creating a resume. Get a counselor to help u out because they can the be reference for application's.
I don't suggest u separate from ur family, i don't know what is ur situation with them, but it is very difficult to survive in living independent because it isn't easy getting all the payments done without a decent education now a days. I suggest to stay with ur parents until u are atleast 21 years of age.

The only thing you can do is what you have been doing, apply to lots of places. However, given that you're still going to be attending school, it will probably be a lot harder for you to find a job. If you live near a major metropolitan area, checking the employment listings for your region on Craigslist (www.craigslist.org) may help.

Well, Good Luck to you. You have applied places, follow up with your applications. As the saying goes, the squeaky wheel usually gets the oil. In other words the future employer will see determination and they look for this in an employee.

Being homeless is not fun. Get a job at a fast food place. They are the easiest place to get a job at and the easiest place to leave once you get a better job.

Just put one foot in front of the other, and get the door. It might not be Domino's but it will be your better chance ever to do something for yourself. Trust me, there is work out there waiting for you.

Reading your comments makes me think you are still somewhat immature and definitely way optimistic. Try to stay at home until you've finished school, it is a lousy, tough world out there.
