Think of all the atoms as being fastened to each other with springs. That's how it was described to me, way back when.

The hotter the substance get, the more the atoms bounce around on their springs. At some point, the structure finally can't take it: the "springs" "break", and the solid breaks down into liquid or gaseous form.

a solid is made of molecules that are compacted really tightly.

There is a set volume so that the molecules cannot escape anywhere like liquid molecules can. So the molecules just vibrate in place next to a series of many other solid molecules, and they all just vibrate.

as a crystalline is heated , its atoms ,ions or molecules vibrate more vigorously . eventually a temperature is reacted at which these vibrations disrubt the ordered crystaline structure . the atoms , ions or molecules can slip past one another , and the solid losed its definite shape
