Crawfish live in running fresh water. You can raise them in converted drums, as long as your irrigation system is first rate. Below you'll find a link on crayfish.

How To Raise Crawdads

2016-12-12 04:02:14 · answer #2 · answered by Anonymous · 0 0

my daughter caught a crayfish when it was about 1/2 an inch long. she also caught some other minnows and what we think may be perch or sunfish. we put them in the ten gallon tank and set it up the same i would for any tropical fish tank (minus the heater).
it's been about 2 months? maybe a little less than that. now the crayfish is about 2 inches long. it has shed a few times and two of the sheddings we arranged and let dry. so now she has two exo-skeletons that she will bring to school for show and tell.
the only problems we had is:
1.) we brought home two crayfish and the bigger one eventually ate the smaller one.
2.) they will catch and eat other fish in the tank. not a problem if you don't care about the other fish. i give mine comets to eat and he eats the minnows when he can catch them. lol. i had one a couple of years ago in my 55 gal. tank and it ate all my guppies.
3.) you need to set up the tank so they can't get out. they will crawl up grasses and tubes, so be carefull. lol
4.) they eat a lot and the tank needs cleaning more often but not much more. not a big problem with a little ten gallon.
they will eat anything. mine eats fish flakes, blood worms, shrimp pellets, chiclid food, raw meats (i don't feed this often) and of course fish and other crayfish.
i don't think a community crayfish tank would work as they would all kill and eat each other. thats why lobsters claws are banded shut.
you wouldn't want to eat crayfish that are brought up on man made foods either because of the chemicals. just thought i'de throw that in. ha ha.
they are pretty neat to watch. they stalk their prey and if food is small enough to carry they carry it as they search for more. if the food is big they will actually stop to eat it. they are also smart.
mine has figured out the flow of the water and when its time to feed the fish it will stay in the flow where the fish have to swim to to eat their food. once they start swimming in, the crayfish will try to grab them. haha. it's pretty interesting.
sorry i went on like this. he he.
have fun with yours.

They live both in water, and on land. They actually burrow into the muddy banks next to streams and lakes. They burrow a hole about a foot and a half down, filled with water, the hole allows them to stay in water. I honestly don't know how to help raise them though..
