PC Pitstop http://www.pcpitstop.com/welcome.asp?source=internetspeed&cs=1000 says that you can get a free test from them, but I have found out it usually ends up costing money.. there is no place on your computer 'without a third party application' that you can tell what speed you are connecting at. If you hover your pointer key over your internet connection it will give you the 'fastest speed' you might be connecting at.

go to www.dslreports.com
click on tools up top, then scroll down till you see "speed test"...click on it and pick a site to test on...wait a few min. and it will do its tests, then show you your upload and download speeds.

if you let your mouse houver over the internet icon on your menu bar, it should list details, including speed.
