Billy RULES. As you'll know from my answer to Goatboy's earlier question, I'm with him in terms of finding Bill Hicks probably the ultimate in stand-up, because he underscored his humomur with real purpose. But Billy Connolly has impressed me probably more than any other comedian for exactly the reasons you highlight - having watched some of his documentaries, both for charity and for profit, his ability to be a real, enthusiastic, positive force with people of all kinds is positively breath-taking. He's also got the impish streak of a child - who else would go to the Sydney Opera House, and take a picture of its rivets? The Eiffel Tower, and come away with a shot of one of its feet? The Forth Bridge, and get a "girder shot"? Who else but Billy could come up with this:
"Never trust a man who, when left alone in a room with a tea cosy, doesn't try it on."
Priceless.
I met him once, after seeing him for the first and so far only time, live. Pretty much disgraced myself. I'm a journalist by trade, and have no trouble interviewing politicians, celebrities, CEOs. But face to face with Billy, I couldn't help but goggle...he asked me a couple of times if I was alright(!) I was sort of dumbstruck, just "Errr....yeah. Great show!"
Anyone else quite like Billy on the planet? Maybe, but if so, I don't know where.

Billy Connelly is very funny. I just had the double treat of seeing him interviewed by Jon Stewart a couple of weeks ago. Many comedians are funny when they are doing their act but are a total drag to see being interviewed.
I love Jon Stewart, but I'm not sure how much of him is pre-scripted and how much is spontaneous. I don't think much but he does such a good interview schtick that I got to love him.
I also saw Bill Bailey being interviewed by Craig Ferguson a few months ago and found him to be very amusing and talented. I'd seen him in a few movies and found him funny but had no idea who he was.

He is very funny.I once read his biography, which was written by his wife, who is a psychiatrist. It is Bittersweet and shows his comedy as a response toa very hard childhood.
For funny and imagination I would also recommend Richard Pryor and Bill Hicks. Both unfortunately, are now deceased
