For many reasons... Sexual strategy being the main one. Male strategy is quantity, while female's quality.

The male usually starts the courtship, because they are only preoccupied in spreading their seed. That way, the more female he can mate with, the better. If it was left to the female she would take her time and choose the proper mate. Make no mistakes, though.

The main provider is the female who carries the baby and will take care of the rest of her life. That way, male do make the first move and invest in the mating, as a natural order since the investment of the prgnancy and bringing up is invested by the female, and that is a lot of work!

If yo look at it it is balanced!

With humans is similar, only the choices are made somewhat more consciously.

The female of most species want to make sure that the genes of the male they choose will translate into healthy offspring.
It may also mean she will be pregnant for a considerable period and reliant on the male for support ie she will expend a great deal of time and energy compared to the male, this will make her choosy. Most males have much less to risk by having sex ie don't get pregnant.
Females at sexual maturity are therefore of limited supply and in demand by males.

According to the theory of evolution, the female has to make the choice for who's child she will have. For this, the female has to be very choosy and the males need to show in some way or the other that they are the one and hence, they make the first move.

As you notice, human being have complicated this natural selection process.... :)

It is called survival of the fittest. It actually goes beyond going first, it sometimes involves battle, sometimes to the death in fighting for the female.

This is natures way of insuring that only the fittest males will propogate the species.

Good question,

They got it and we want it. By nature males want to spread their seeds (we make millions of them) as far as possible to enhance the chance of our genes being passed on after our death. Where as the female makes very few eggs so they protect them more. Besides as man I value any woman I have to work to get more than one that giving it away (I like doing the chasing, and women can not take Rejection as well as men).

b/c the females put all their energy in to rearing the offspring it is only natural that the male would be responsible for courtship...what i am saying is that it is easier for the males to be the proactive mater because they can do it repeatedly in one mating season...once the female gets pregnant she is out of commission...but the male can keep on mating therefore exercising his fitness and continuing his genetic survival.

I think its tradition, men were always considered the protectors and generally the higher gender so they made the first move, it would have been improper for a woman. Now a days that should be changing though.

Why, in the zoology section, were the first three answers to this question incoherent? Such nonsense needs to be relegated to the social science section. Think before you answer.
