There are a few programs named similar to Adaware. Make sure yours is from lavasoft.

For most virus and spyware removal follow the steps below.

Install a good virus protection suite & update it. Pc cillen by trendmicro is a good one & has a free online scan that also removes problems. AVG has a free version for download. Avast is another great free one.

Then start your pc in safe mode (depending on pc type this is usually a different key combination), generally as soon as you turn on the pc you hit the key combination F8 and choose safe mode. Don't be scared, it's supposed to look this weird. Safe mode runs the bare minimum, which is why you want to remove problem programs in it, they can't hide in safe mode like they can during normal start up. Then run your virus software. This should remove it. If not completely then you need to go to the trendmicro or symantec web site for further instructions. & try hitting it with the programs I listed below.

For future reference:

Use a firewall, zone alarm is free & pretty user friendly. & get the following products.

Get Spybot Search & Destroy by Patrick Kolla Great free program for finding spyware. Don't be cheap, give the guy a donation.

Ad aware by lavasoft is free for personal use.

& dump Internet Explorer. It's got more holes than swiss cheese. Get firefox, it has some really great add on extensions that block scripts, pop-up's & more ... & it's free. Depending on how you access the internet (some programs like Yahoo dsl, & Netzero try to force you to use Internet Explorer) just click on your Firefox icon to surf the web not Internet Explorer.

You can stop most programs from loading by using "msconfig". It's not on XP so you have to download it from a site such as perfectdrivers. Most programs beyond firewalls and virus protection do not need to run at start up. It's too bad that "Blackvipers" site is still down. He had an incredible list of how to stop unwanted and unneeded services in 2k & XP from running & slowing pc down. It is however still being posted on sites, so google his name.

Hope I helped. & don't forget --> Just because you have protection doesn't mean it will work if you don't keep it updated & run it once a week. Just think of all the time you'll save not trying to repair a virus infection!

Joshua:

If you want really good free antispyware, go to: www.superantispyware.com and download the free version.

Excellent free program with automatic updates. This program is not a fly by night scan. Example it will scan your memory, registration, an every file/folder in your system. (I have 140,000 objects an every one of the are scanned).

Far superior to any one that you must pay for.

And you can also download from www.lavasoft.com their free Ad-aware Se Personal, that is excellent.

Also you can download from Prague, www.ewido.net their Ewido malware program that is not free and scan all my 140,000 objects and becomes free after thirty days if you don't purchase. They just remove the guard in the tray and you don't get auto updates every hour on the hour. You can update manual.

Ad Aware to my knowledge has embedded spyware. I have a security system used by the Government of China and I know for a fact that program has embedded spyware in it. So get rid of it.

Plus make sure all of your critical updates are upto date from Microsoft.

An it is always a good idea to reboot after any an all spyware, viruses, malware have been removed.

Good Luck

Browse through Yahoo Answers at any time of day or night and you'll see several recent questions just like this one. It's a very common problem with Windows PCs. So common that it should make you wonder why you keep your PC. Why don't you own a computer that doesn't have these problems? Don't be a masochist, switch!

Switch now and in a month or two you'll be wondering why you didn't switch sooner. Everything is easier on a Mac, and there are NO viruses. That's right: ZERO. I can't remember the last time I scanned for one (AV scanners are available for the Mac, but they only look for PC viruses!) and my system is as good today as the day I bought it.

Either something is wrong with ad-aware not being able to delete the spyware or you keep getting spyware from your internet activity. Personally, I think ad-aware can't remove it. Find a way to remove it and then download spyware blaster for free. That will protect you from spyware.

Depending upon how you set AdAware up, it will detect both tracking cookies and MRUs, neither of which is considered harmful spyware but will be generated during normal surfing.

To sell you the upgraded one. AD Aware is, itself, spyware.
