my laptop has recently been upgraded in RAM - (another memory card has been inserted) but after rebooting and plugging into the AC adapter, the screen displayed the message 'there is a missing or currupt file. windows....???/drivers. please insert the original windows startup disk'. i do not actually have the startup disk as computer was donated from a workplace. Windows will now not start and the screen remains black, Is there anything i can do to rectify this problem without having the original startup disk, and sending off to the manufacturer as am off to university at the end of week??

pre Installed on computer/lap top
start the computerin safe mode F8 key at first screen, open windows explorer click on tools on the menu bar at the top/folder options/view/select show hidden files/untickbox hide protected operating system files you will see the hidden folders/ tick show hidden files and folders, you will then see all files on your system, then look for a folder in windows named options or preinstall if you have this open the folder and click on the setup.exe file windows will then reinstall itself at the instalation screen when it reboots pick repair windows leave file system as it is this will re install windows to factory settings but leave your files as they are on the computer you will still need your serial number to re install you will only loose any updates that you installed

It sounds like your best bet would be take it by a local computer shop and let a pro look at the computer for you, make sure you tell them about the memory you installed, no senses in paying them extra to trouble shoot to find a problem if the memory install is bad.
They don't need your rescue disk because they have a profession boot disc that will usually start a dead computer.

Good Luck,

The startup disk is actually the hard drive on which the Windows operating system is located and stored. You might have inserted the RAM sticks in the wrong order.

RAM upgrade should not do what you describe. Windows recognizes the new memory and runs from then on. You have a different problem but without a recovery disk, I don't know what you can do. Try shutting it down again and rebooting.

this can happen on laptops. put the old memory back in if it works you have bought the wrong memory for you´re lappy. if it does not work then you may have shorted the memory controller(did you remove the battery). if it does not work send it to the manufacturer before you damage it even more.

No. But make sure your motherboard and BIOS can handle the memory. Some have a maximum allowed.
