stripes running vertically along the body. It kept swimming near us and would get on our legs. It never hurt any of us. Does anyone know what this thing might be called?

If it got on your legs, it probably had a purpose in doing so. It sounds like a leech, which are actually a type of worm, and which are attracted to warm-blooded animals, including people, with the intent of taking a bit of that warm blood. Leeches are good swimmers, and many of them have colorful markings.

If it was in the ocean it was probably some kind of eel.
