The authorities are trying to solve symptoms and are ignoring causes. These are a bit harder to understand and politicians prefer simple solutions.

USA is basically at war. In times of war, things have to change. If you are not tough, your may die.
And although torture is abominable, imagine this.
Supposing you captured a man who was part of a group that planned to blow up an aircraft in flight. Imagine the person you love most is on that flight, and this man on the ground is the only one who knows which of the passengers are the bombers.
The way the current terrorists are, they are prepared to die. So, what would you do to get the information from him? Give him a cup of coffee and a piece of cake and ask him nicely.
My advice - stop being so idealistic. That is detrimental in times like this. If Americans had not been so PC and idealistic before 9/11, and put the block on guys wanting to learn to fly but who had no interest in learning take-offs and landings, the WTC and 3000 people would still be around.
The people who taught those guys just did not want to offend foreigners by telling them to go run.
We know now to be more cautious.

As far as the powers that be listening in on people, I have no problem. I don't do anything I need to hide so they can listen in all they want. Got no problem with an extra 10 minutes or so getting onto a flight. Rather arrive a little later than arrive a lot dead. As far as torture, that I have to admit is wrong. Information can be acquired without kneecapping someone. Maybe someone should pass that on to the mafia.

I have some news for you. That stuff has been going on for eons. It is just now becoming mainstream because the Bush Administration can't keep their mouths shut not to mention the Freedom of Information Act. Just because something is declassified doesn't mean everyone needs to KNOW about it.
Oh....and post in the correct thread.

Project Echelon was in full swing during the Clinton Admin. Clinton initiated the Carnivore email monitoring and tried to get the Clipper Chip installed in all electronic communication devices so government could snoop easily.
Clinton also ordered the post offices to snoop in the postal mail of 'suspicious' persons. He used the IRS as a weapon against those who challenged him, with critics receiving multiple audits.
During the Clinton Admin, a few terrorists were put on trial and imprisoned, the most notorious being the Blind Sheikh, who then continued directing terror operations through his lawyer. Bush put an end to that by eliminating Client/Attorney privilege for terrorists and the fellow's lawyer was caught in the act.
Rules of war require that we hold enemy POWS until the fight (their cause to be a threat) has ended. POWs are not subjected to trials - they are simply held until the end of hostilities.
The 'good old days' of the Clinton Admin allowed Al Qaeda to build a formal terrorist training college in Afghanistan and churn out 20,000 graduates who went into the world to lead training and organization of terrorist cells. Failure to fight back gave the enemy freedom to attack us, and other nations, repeatedly and successfully.
The success of the USS Cole attack, the first World Trade Center attack, the Oklahoma City bombing (orchestrated by Terry Nichols and Ramzi Yousef) ... all these gave the terrorists ever more boldness.
Regarding Iraq - it was Clinton who committed our nation to eliminating Saddam's regime by force and installing a new government in Iraq. Read the "Iraq Liberation Act". Clinton bombed Iraq for days, killing uncounted numbers of Iraqis, and tried to support insurgents in overthrowing the regime. Clinton Failed Miserably because he did not understand what level of force would be needed to succeed.
If you had lived through the 'good old days', you would remember these things.

The problem with this country is all th cry babies who complain about the problems without doing anything productive to solve the problems. If you are not happy with our current administration then do your best to vote it out.Or you can continue to cry and tell everyone you talk to how sad our country has become, Go out talk to people and get them to vote with you on ousting the administration so that you can vote in who you think will do a better job. I would just ask you to fairly look at those who you think will do a better a job and bear in mind that when the bleeding heart liberals were in office how they let Iranian militants take hundreds of our citizens hostage and hold them till a conservative took office and got them out. Least we not forget how liberal Clinton ,oh Monica blow me in th oval office please, let Bin Laden attack us without any attempt to punish him.I hope you are smart enough to see that without strong leaders we are nothing more than a country one Jimmy Carter away from submission to the militant Muslims of the world.

Why are you asking such a stupid question in the earth sciences thread? Won't the politics people talk to you any more?
You can go back to where you came from. Next time, make sure you are in the correct thread.

We have an administration that has usurped too much power, too few people are opposing it strongly enough, and fundamentalism and ingorance have become mainstream rather than in the back woods where they belong. In short, our government has become a hybrid of a theocracy and a corporate oligarchy.
But god is on our side, so how can there be any problems? LOL!

Everyone in this world will not automatically like you just because you want them to. So you were disappointed in your Argentinian cousin's reactions towards you. So what? Get a grip. There could have been a million reasons for this none of which had anything to do with what you said or did while in his company. Your thoughts about it all, however, are solely on you -- not him. With those thoughts, you are reacting to your expectations of his behavior not his actions. Has it occurred to you that he may have been so stunned by you that it caused him to be reticent to interact with you? Is it possible he may have been so smitten by you that he became confused by your mere presence? Is it possible there might be boys in your own school who get tongue tied and totally confused when they see you because they don't know in their shyness how to approach you despite the fact they want to? Any guy worth spending time with would certainly desire of you that you not get so wrapped in yourself that you fail to see love and lust (or the possibility of it) in them when it stares you right in the face. It is also possible he was genuinely shy to the point of acting against his own best interest in you while with you just as it is also possible he was simply acting on instructions from the adults in his life to leave you alone while you were there. One also wonders if it may not have been a question of whose turf you were on. The only way to work that out would be to ask yourself if you really believe he would have been so reticent to interact with you if he had been a visitor to you on your turf -- not his. Perhaps such a switch of locale might have proven him to be a Latin lover you could have become enamored of rather than an Argentinian nerd who couldn't summon the courage to be so bold. In any event, none of us will ever know for sure given how hard you were while sitting in judgment of him. Too bad. I rather suspect he will survive your presentment of him while you were in the land of the gauchos but only time will tell if you can thrive while being so judgmental of the guys in your life while at home. One also wonders if your aunt might not have found you to be equally as boring in your quest for excitement as you found her to be in her absence of it. It is, after all, a thought worth pondering given the details you provided.
