Most pilots in civilian life got their flight training from the military, whether it be helicopters, or jets. Tell your son is he has aspirations of being a pilot, he must be in top physical condition, with good eyesight. Even if you have the brains, bad eyesight disbars many from entering flight school in the military. You son could get civilian training, and the physical requirements are not as stringent as the military's ,but the cost is prohibitive, unless you are well off financially.

salon.com runs a column every Friday by Patrick Smith called "Ask the Pilot". He has a website at http://www.askthepilot.com/ where the articles are archived. I am not a pilot and know nothing about flying but have learned a great deal by reading his articles. He has covered average salaries, how hours worked per week are calculated, union issues, seniority issues, what happens when your airline goes bankrupt and many other subjects. He writes well. I would direct your son to his webpage and let him start reading. Mr. Smith has published a compliation of his articles in his book "Ask the Pilot". It is also available on the website.

I am a flight attendant, and pilots are great. However with everything that has gone on since 9/11, the job conditions have diminished. Of course I am talking about commercial pilots.
However if that is his dream, help him, support him. I am from Canada so I can't help you on colleges in the U.S, but start researching...good luck!!

Western Michigan University in Kalamazoo, Michigan offers an aviation program. Pilots make a good salary and it seems like an adventurous career, we need more good ones, that's for sure.

I went to Jacksonville University in Jacksonville, FL and they have programs in both aviation and aviation management. Embry Riddle Aeronautical University in Daytona Beach, Florida also obviously has flight instruction.
