Growing up in West Texas I often wondered as I watched the gusting winds blowing through the trees, each puff taking a few more of the autumn leaves. Just how does that last leaf hang on while all the others have fallen days before? At what point does it yield itself to the mercy of the wind? Which gust will be the one that breaks the leaf’s hold? Is it clinging out of desperation hoping not to spend the winter in someone’s rain gutter, or trampled on by little feet playing gaily in the heap? Is it fear that makes it hang on until it loses all ability to cling a second longer? Or sheer determination to hang on until the end? What makes one leaf stronger than another? Who chooses which leaf falls when?

Man ya must be a hot woman but dear leaves can’t think about many if any thing at all. I hope this helps. Hey are you married or tied up in a relationship or anything like that? Leaves may think on some level but I don’t think they worry about ending in a rain gutter. But then again who really knows. I wish I had to peace of mind to watch wind blown leaves and worry about their hopes and dreams. By the way if leaves think do they dream as well.

Leaves, like people, come in all different types. Some "hang on" for a long time, others just don't last long at all. It's a random distribution.

Could you imagine if all leaves were the same? One moment you have a big, bushy tree, the next--FWUMPH!!--all the leaves are in a big heap on the ground.

It would be even worse for people. If we all lived to exactly the same age, I think that would be horrible.

I'm afraid you question is badly flawed. You are referring to the leaf as if it has a consciousness. It does not. It does not 'cling' to the branch, nor does it fell 'desperation'. It has no capacity to think, reason or feel. The 'question', therefore, is meaningless.

Yes, I have often wondered why that last leaf clings to its branch. Its amazing how tenacious a single leaf can be!

my dear... a leaf itself is life. to fight nature's brute is it's way of saying, "i'm alive, let me live another day"... the decision of yielding to nature is just as if giving up on life. we all know that life is precious, and we'll fight to survive.. just like a leaf, clinging to a branch, saying, "even if i stand alone, i will never yield my life to your ways, but my own"...

Just as we want to hold on for as long as possible. Yet there comes a time when we must let go and go home!
