It's rather expensive.

You have to start with a psychologist who specializes in transsexuality. That will be regular doctor visits for at least 1 or 2 years. $100 a visit? I'm not sure. I have not seen one. This should be covered by insurance.

Then there will be the estrogen, progesterone, and anti-androgen prescriptions. Those are expensive and not generally covered by insurance. Could run you $150-200 a month.

Then there's electrolysis (if you're male). That can be expensive as it requires at least 1 visit a week for a year. I've heard of that running over $5k. You don't want laser hair removal. It's not proven to be permanent, although they claim it is (nobody knows), I have heard some bad stories of the hair follicle burning up inside the root and leaving behind dark particles that make you look like have a continous 5 o'clock shadow. Theoretically, these should disappear as the skin is renewed, but that could take years. By the way, this only happens if the laser operator is inexperienced. You could potentially scar from electrolysis too, so neither is perfect. A good operator won't damage your skin for either technique.

Then you'll need a new wardrobe. That can easily run you $2k even if you find discounted items. This is just for starters. Once you go full time you will need more.

Will you need hair replacement for balding? If you're young, going on the drugs now will prevent balding. If you're older and you need hair grafts, that can run you $20,000 for an average case.

You need to figure out if you need FFS (facial feminization surgery). That can run you $20k from a GOOD doctor if the work is substantial. Trust me, you don't want a 3rd bidder on this one. There are a few great doctors in the world.

Then we get to the GRS (gender reassignment surgery, also known as SRS). That can run you about $10-15k. Again, you want the best doctor you can find. A botched surgery is FOREVER.

So let's sum it all up:

psychologist: probably $1,000 with insurance for 2 years
drugs: $2,400 for 1 year
electrolysis: $5,000
wardrobe: $2,000
ffs: $20,000
grs: $15,000

total:
$43,400

total with hair grafts:
$63,400

total without ffs or hair grafts:
$23,400 (for the very lucky)

Of course, if you're lucky you won't need FFS. But, most people need at least a little.

edit:
Oh yes, I almost forgot. You might want breast implants if your breasts don't grow to your liking. That will run you about $5k. I will leave that out of the totals as it's really optional and not required. Also, the younger you are the larger they will grow. General theory is you're 1 size smaller than your mother and sister.

edit:
One thing to consider. If this sounds very expensive to you, most people pay for this over a period of time, 4 to 10 years. You should concentrate on finishing college and getting a professional job. You'll need a good job to fund all of it. You should also consider do you want to transition during college or after? If you think there's any chance you'll start balding, it's far cheaper to prevent it than to fix it later.

Also, if you're under 21 and still finishing puberty you'll find that going on hormones before puberty ends will make you pass much more easily due to preventing your male traits from finishing development.

edit:
Augusta:
Online tests are useless. The're always inaccurate as they stereotype. I've taken them and ranged from masculine, androgenous, and feminine. They will only confuse the matter. He should go to a therapist and figure out for himself what he is.

This is a link to an online gender test called the Cogiati test
http://www.transsexual.org/Ttestpages1.html
It's not foolproof but it might help you a little.
There is another interactive test called the SAGE test that I like better but it does not seem to be available at present.

It's a guide to just about everything a T person has to do to transform her body

You are still quite young. Before you are going to be able to take any decisions about altering your body, you will have to have some psychiatric consultations. Try and make sure you find a counsellor who is not a committed christian and does not follow the Freudian school. Often you find names of suitable psychs via the internet.

You are not the only one in this situation. You have the advantage that you are young, lots of people have already gone through this process and survived, and you can find lots of help via the internet.

Warmest wishes and be strong.

You can't 'think' you're transgender. Transgender is a procedure of changing your sex and after that you are referred to as a transgender. So you can't be that before the operation. The earlier answer about seeing a psychiatrist, living the life style for 6 months etc, is correct. It is legal, but you have to pass many psychiatric tests before this operation can take place. You might want to talk to others, or professionals about what you feeling today.

Lots. Currently I suspect you would not be able to get anyone to do the operation legally. I'm just saying this from your lack of grammar and spelling ability, it suggest that you are likely fairly young.

As for the process, I do not have first hand experience but know it takes several years, involves an in-depth psychiatric analysis, and 6+ months living as the other sex before the operation.

Use the internet. Find a LGBT support group in your area and talk to others in your situation.
