No Science here please, I want a little profound, deep thought. I have my own philosophy as regards this, however the best answer is given to someone orginal, and profound, it does not have to be the same answer as I have, try to apply it in some way as I have with mine, life echos many things remember from the simple to the complex.
Good Luck, to all, look forward to hearing your reply!!

To Nathan if you feel that way perhaps it is you who should not be wasting my time with irrelevant answers and stay away from the Philosophy section? as it is according to you a "waste of time" Philosphical, as my question was.

We all came from the sun, and now it continues to keep us alive.
With this in mind I wrote this poem to best answer your question.
------------------------------------------------------------------
The Sun is truly our mother.
To us, she in fact gave birth.
Our atoms came from inside her,
as well as all those on Earth.
The planets are really her children.
We circle our mother at play.
She feeds us warmth and helps us grow,
with each and every day.
At night she tucks us in our beds,
and leaves the stars to shine.
With night lights draped across the sky,
we know that we'll be fine.
She wakes us up in the morning,
with a warm kiss of light on our face.
And makes the sky turn blue for us,
so we won't even fear deep space.
And then once more the daytime ends,
we climb into our beds.
With thoughts of our protective mom,
filling up our little heads.
Again we see the stars come out,
but love we feel, not sorrow.
Our warm protective mom will come,
and wake us up tomorrow.

Because the Sun knows that the stars will loose their significance in his presence.
Because the Sun knows that all the stars put together cannot give out even a ray of its light.
Great people do not rub their shoulders with petty-minded people because they know their own value.
Stars cannot shine in the GREAT LIGHT of the Sun.Only after the Sun has left ,do the Stars show their twinkle.
In the presence of Great men , ignorant people cannot take a lead;only after their departure do they show their poweress.

Although we can't see the stars during the day, we know they are there. When the sun goes down we can gaze upon lights that don't directly give us anything. Their presence and influence on what is close to them is not affected by our not seeing them during the day. Our sun may be a star that someone else can see when their sun has set. Do we sometimes need to see what isn't closest to us so that we may see beyond our own limits?

Why doesn't the sun show its face in the presence of the stars?
Does the sun know it is? Who are we to know? Do the Stars know they are kin to the one we call home? What are we to know?
For the beginnings were they made by one that shines greater then they that sine in the night or even the one we call Sun by day. For it's name is Sol after us.

1) Heart and intellect... they always are arch rivals. Everything in this world has exactly the opposite of it. It's just fair, because things are balanced. The day has its rival, the night. They will never come at the same time.
OR
2) A big entity like Sun thinks it's against its status to face smalller ones like Stars.

Ok, so leaving science aside and trying to get somewhat "lyrical", I'd picture things like this:
The Sun does not allow stars (which are inferior and smaller than Him) to interfere with His light and grandeur, not even assist it by any means; something like "don't throw your pearls to pigs".
The Sun is a totalitarian absolutist ruler. Dixit.
