I'd highly recommend checking out Simplicity's line of patterns for these things. If this is your first time making a toy, it would be best to have a printed pattern that isn't too complicated. Theirs fit the bill pretty well. If you sew regularly, McCall's patterns may also be a good bet. They both have some cute bears and other animals.
If you watch the sales at JoAnn Fabrics, you can get the patterns quite inexpensively. At their website, you can sign up for the email flyer or the regular mailed flyer or both. You have to be on their list somewhere to get their ads, however. (I think the website is www.joann.com, but I'm not sure. There might be punctuation in there somewhere, like a hyphen or something. Google "Jo-Ann Fabrics" and you'll get their address easily.)

Also if you are willing to try you can make up your own pattern. All you need to do is know how to draw a general teddy bear shape cut it out and sew it together. Whether you hand sew it or use a machine it is up to you. just make sure you leave an opening to stuff it.

i have a sally ann patten that came with a card making magazine a while ago,
but there are some craft shops that sell soft toy fabic pack, and all you need is the stuffing for the inside,
i have made a few in the past,

check out build a bear first then go home and copy it look in craft stores for patterns or even in joanne fabrics if you have that store
