I just moved into 4 year old home. I found that 1 electrical outlet in living room does not work. All others in house do. What causes this? should I be concerned? The house is a rental property.

I agree that the outlet is probably controled by a switch, but definately call the landloard and have them get it checked, they might even know if it is a switched outlet, in any event they are responsible for having it checked/fixed.

Probably just a loose wire - if you want to try to fix it - make sure you find the breaker box - turn off the breaker, take of the cover and see if you can see a loose wire.

I had this same problem, but the fix was much easier - there was a light switch in the closet that I did not know about that controlled this outlet and it was switched off.

I have seen these outlets be controlled by a switch, but if it is not, I would call the agent and get it fixed. It could be a very serious problem even enough to cause a fire. For peace of mind contact the agent or land lord and request a electrician to solve the problem.

Simply contact the rental agent and ask that the electrical problem be fixed. You rented the house expecting it to be fully functional. Bet you would call if the roof leaked.......or the toilet was stopped up............so just call the rental agent and report a non functioning electrical outlet.

Check the lightswitch on the wall, A house that old is setup to have a lamp work off a wall switch. If not, check the switch next to it, the wires going to the dead switch are coming off of it
