If a word in the dictionary were misspelled how would we know?

You say "the" dictionary, like there is only one. Compare the spelling of that word in several different dictionaries. In English, your best bet is to look of the work in the OED (Oxford English Dictionary), because it gives the history of the word's development (even including alternate and previous spellings).

Tee Hee, often wondered this myself. As at work we have auditors, same thing ... who audits the auditors that audit the auditors.
There must be a master spell-checker, kept in a vault deep in the Atlas Mountains, under lock and key and surrounded by guards.

If every dictionary mis-spells the word, are you sure it is not your spelling that is wrong?!!

I wouldn't I can't read. My dog reads to me, and types what I say into Yahoo answers. He was trained well.
