files. What are these files and how can I go in an determine which ones I can delete or determine which ones I might not need? There is very little storage space left on this disk. I would also like to know how important are these FAT files?

My computer is only a year old with windows XP, and I have seen the NTFS designation before! Right now I believe I ony have about 725 MB of space left on this disk!

Those are disk formats not files. I am not sure what you are looking at so I wouldn't delete any of them until you figure out what you are looking at.

FAT - File Allocation Table - This is pretty old and you hardly ever see it anymore. It has a 16 bit file system and wastes space on a big drive

FAT32 - The same thing as FAT but it is 32 bit. This makes much smaller blocks and works with big disks. This is still pretty common and it works with most OSs

The other one you see is NTFS. This only really works with NT, 2000, XP and Server 2000/2003.

You cannot delete FAT or FAT32 files. If you do your computer will no longer work. FAT or File Allocation Tables is the 'map' that the operating system uses to store and find files. Without it, your hard drive is just so much spining junk. Search your HD for items you can remove such as .jpg or .mp3 files, which can take up alot of space in a hurry. If you have an older computer with a small hard drive, today's bloated programs take up alot more space than they did just a couple of years ago, so you may be looking at upgrading to a larger HD.
