It's severly swollen and in excrusiating pain. If it's broken will the doctor cast it or brace it?

Casts are not applied to digits on the hands. Your doctor will do an X-ray to determine whether or not it is broken, dislocated, or sprained - then will likely tape it to the middle finger and secure both to a splint. Ice should be applied, and Tylenol or Motrin can ease the pain. After that, all it takes is time to heal.

If the joint is swollen, it sounds more like a sprain, and in either case, you may need to wear a splint to protect it. There really isn't a way to cast a finger and do anything more than a splint will do. A doctor may give you something for pain, even something for inflamation(generally motrin/ibuprofen will do as well).

you should probably go to the doctor just to make sure that it is a clean break. if it's compacted, it won't heal back correctly. they will probably just put a little splint on it like you have. there isn't much else that they can do for it. but, you should get it checked out so that you don't have to worry about never being able to bend it again. have you told your parents? edit: well, if they don't want you to get it x-rayed, why do they want you to see the doctor? the dr. will only splint it, which you have already done. are they worried about the radiation you will be exposed to during an x-ray? it's minimal...just make sure they put a lead shield on you when they make the exposure.

If it is a simple fracture, a metal splint is usually used, with tape wrapped around the finger and the splint.
It is not possible to put a cast on just one finger. If the break were bad enough, the hand would have to be encased.

It depends on the nature of the fracture. if its cracked the cast would probably not be needed. But if its broken then a cast would be needed to straighten it to make sure it grows back the way it should.Just remember that if you are unable to move your finger it might be broken and you need to see a Doctor or have a crooked finger all your life.If your are able to move your finger be it just a bit but it still pains its just sprained and it would heal all by itself in a couple of days.

He will probably put a splint on it. Have you not run this finger of your under a cold running tap for 10 minutes, and have you kept said finger elevated? What have you done to help yourself first? Have you got a splinter in the finger that you can't see?

If it's broken, the doctor wil put a metal splint on it. Hopefully, you've soaked it in ice water several times a day.

If it's the joint, maybe you jammed it. That it very painful. Even if it's broken, they'll just put a splint on the finger.

Often they have you wear a splint that is attached to the next finger to stabilize it. Not usually a cast. Ouch! Sorry!
