I got a small (2" x 2") tattoo on my left deltoid/bicep area 2 weeks ago. It is all black with 2 little eyes that are blue.

There are a lot of areas of my tattoo (the black part) that look great. Then there are blotches in the middle of the tattoo that actually look very light...with some little parts that look like regular skin.

Is it possible that certain parts of my skin just didn't take the ink very well, or is this just work from a shoddy tattoo artist?

I went to a very reputable place in the area and I looked at pictures of HUNDREDS of tattoos that this guy has done before and they looked awesome. Actually he had the best portfolio out of all the artists at that shop...that's why I picked him.

Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks!

No, there is no way that you can cover the tattoo with ink of your same skin tone. The tattoos will still show through. I wouldn't recommend laser removal either. It makes your skin look rough.. Similar to old people skin. We've seen a lot of it here at my shop. Another possibility is to get it covered with another tattoo. Artwork that has a lot of linework, dark colors, and no empty spaces. Lotuses, dark colored koi fish, dark red roses, etc. See a well renowned shop in your area so that they can help you decide what to cover it with. I hope that I was helpful! Feel free to contact me for more info. PS: Don't let anyone tell you that you can only cover it with black (unless it's tribal)! Its not true!

Well, the only thing I know is if you wear clothing or something that rubs directly on it before the tatt has completely healed it can rub off some of the ink. That happened to me with a foot tattoo. They warned me about it, but at the time I couldn't get around wearing boot's, so some faded away. It can be re-inked though.

Both of the last two answers that said bad work are WRONG. Many times parts of a tatoo need a touch up. You are putting a lot of ink under the skin and quite naturally the body may clear some of it. Part of the reason the skin is tender and swells a bit is the body's reaction to the needle and ink. I have several tatoos, and hed to have most of them touched up. Especially tatoos with a lot of black in them seem to need touch ups the most.

Many tatts just need a touch up because the skin doesn't take the ink the first time.
Some of mine needed to be touched up, some didn't.
You need to wait to the 6 week point to get it touched up, because by then, it will have healed all the way and the artist can see what it needs.

You answered my question a couple of minutes ago about my acne. Maybe you and I just have messed up skin. I got a tattoo a few months ago, on my ankle. (it a blue butterfly with details on the wings). Anyway, the ink bled out from the outside edge. My husband got his tattoo from the same place and his looks great. Mine also looks really faded like I've had it for years. Like I said maybe we just have messed up skin. :(

its not necessarily bad work it can be skin. i'm not getting anymore tattoos because my skin is too soft and doesn't take ink well. on the other hand the thougher the skin the harder it is to penetrate too-which shouldn't be an issue on the arm though. And if you picked it or parts of scab tore off or didn't keep ointment on it it can also lead to discoloration.

The work was bad. I cannot say why. If you moved or if he had a bad day, I don't know. The skin is pretty much the same all over. There are issues with scar tissue though. There are also issues with aging and tattoos. They don't age well and can stretch or fade with stretching. What do you think tattoos do as the skin wrinkles? Stay out of the sun.
