A garage sale ocurrs in your garage.

A Yard sale ocurrs in your yard (preferably your front yard).

It's a bit more personal for someone to come into your garage. In this day and age, people are less comfortable walking into some strangers garage, so perhaps a yard sale is your best bet.

The time of year - in the fall when it's cold, the sales are held in the garage - in the spring and summer it is warmer and the sales are in the yard.

In a garage sale, you want to sell your garage. In a yard sale, you want to sell your yard. And a flea market is where you can buy fleas!
