convicts like most cichlids protect their young, if you have only a male and female in a 20 gallon tank, they will actually raise and protect all the fry, it's a great thing to watch. i had a male andfemale in 20 gallon high, they raised the fry until they were almost a half inch, then the mother started to protect them from the father and i had to seperate the adults. but the fry to this day are still in the tank with their mother living happily. granted convicts are aggressive, some of the young ones have killed each other over the last month or two, but thats just survival of the fittest, also due to overstocking as convicts require 20 gallons per pair.

when you noticed that the female has a bulging mouth go ahead and put her in a setperate tank with a sponge on the botton of you pick up tube this will keep the fish from being sucked up. after she has reliced the babies you need to take her out of the tank and put her back in with the other fish. so she won't eat them. to feed the babies jyou can feed them frozen brime shrimp. the key is to keep momma from eating them. I have two 55 gallons with african and convict cichlids I put the momma in a 10 gallon. she can have up to 30 babies. she will have her babies after 21 days.

maybe its just that he had snoughs tuff to hide in. if you mimic the natural habitat of your convicts it might help your odds. plus in the wild they are most likely more agressive than your current tank occupants so they dont protect the young as well as they normaly would have.
