The word is Latin and unless you are speaking of medicine you are refering to a room. In medicine it addresses one of the chambers of the heart. It means really the first part of a two part thing and when you are speaking of it in relationship to a house, it is a chamber similar to being either a really small living room or a small study, or it can be like a big hall with sparse furnishings or possibly only pictures and plants that preceeds the main or real living room. The thing is that it is a room and that it preceeds or comes before the rest. It is not like a den that is just another room. It is like a big,big fancy entranceway. Most frequently it is found as I told you but in the upstairs of a victorian house for example, at the head of the stairs you could find in the tower a big open round room full of chairs and tables and plants which has a hall running from each open side and down that hall you find bedrooms. Well, that big room space in the tower is what you could call an atrium too but the original useage applys to very old-ancient Roman architecture and is the name that is given to the large room you enter before going into the Roman house proper. It is not a sunroom at the back of the house and it is not an enclosed porch or "Florida room" in the front because it is not a porch. It is part of the indoor home and it is not any type of a green house or anything similar even though you may want to put some florwers in it the way people do in their kitchen or living room. It is the nice first room you ENTER BEFORE you enter the rest of the house. If it is upstairs, it is the nice first room you see and enter before going anywhere else upstairs but 99% of the time it refers to the front of the main floor. Often the room is not even square but octagonal, although both instances abound. The other trick is that it is sort of a preview of the living standard and it is not as big as the other rooms. It is never a garden, those are outside. The closest thing I can think of in a garden that resembles an atrium is a gazebo, but the gazebo is not a place where you are involved in daily living and it does not have other rooms it preceeds.

a large space in a building open to the ceiling. An atrium usually has a glass ceiling or many windows to let in a lot of light.
In classical architecture, an interior courtyard that is open to the weather. In contemporary architecture, a significant interior space, often skylighted, used for circulation.
In the Roman period this was the inner courtyard of a house, left open to the sky, and generally built by the affluent urbam classes. In the 20th century the word has been adopted to describe dramatic enclosed glass-roofed indoor spaces associated with high-rise hotels and office buildings that are treated as substitutes for the public realm.
An entrance hall of a building, often rising through a number of storeys and containing lifts, reception areas and plants. Originally the hall or chief apartment of a Roman house.

Actually, I'm pretty sure an Atrium is a Living Room. I take Latin, and thats what the 'living room area' is called.

It is an area with a large vaulted glass ceiling - rather like a conservatory or Florida room with plants.
