As windows updates the media player they don't account for older sound cards. You need an updated sound card or an updated driver for the one you have. Go to windows update on all programs after your start button and follow through on all of that. If an updated driver does not fix the problem, you will have to have someone put in a new sound card. Make sure it is windows compatable for 2000 through XP so you get the right driver. Then windows media updates will not stop you for a while.

You either need to reinstall the driver, there is a setting you are missing, the audio card is bad, or the speakers are bad. There is no quick way to tell you how to figure out which it is.

The first two are not to bad to go through. You can get the driver either on the CD that came with the computer, of download it from the manufacturer.

The last two are hardware. It is very likely the audio card is on the motherboard and that usually costs more than a laptop is worth. The problem with laptops are the parts are all custom for that laptop. If you have reinstalled the driver and it still doesn't work, you might want to have a pro look at it.

Just a quick thought, does the headphone jack work? If it is the internal speakers and not the card, the headphones will still work.

Just do it. You'll be glad you did, and you'll wonder why you didn't switch earlier.
