You could drive the coast of Lake Michigan in either direction. The UP is beautiful, and most of the Michigan shoreline is nice too. If you go to Michigan, I'd highly recommend stopping in Saugatuck, a nice little town with lots of good food & shops. There, you could hike up to Mount Baldi. There are also the Dunes that are a little farther north toward Muskegon Mich.

My family has been going to White Pines State Park in Oregon, IL for over 40 years. It is so scenic and beautiful there, and the smell of the White Pines overload your sense the minute you drive in. One of my favorite parts of it is when you first drive in, you drive through the water of a stream. It is something I have always remembered and haven't seen it anywhere else. It is about 2.5 hours from Chicago and well worth the drive!

Wisconsin Dells is one of the best places to go in the Midwest.
There are a few things to do around Madison (Cave of The Mounds and House on The Rock) but the Dells are the BEST.
DO NOT MISS THE "DUCKS". Take the green ones.

Definitely go to Galena. U.S. 20 west runs through the nicest part of the state. You will see lots of farm land and beautiful scenic overlooks once you get west of Stockton. After you stop and look, Galena is a quaint river town worth exploring. Then go a little farther west to Dubuque, cross the mighty Mississippi river and take a river boat ride on it. They have casinos there too.
