We've had the driest summer on record in this area, but the mushrooms keep growing, in bunches, in my gardens as well as the lawn. I've lived here three years and have never seen a mushroom here before.

First of all, perhaps the mushrooms that you have are not coming in response to what we normally percieve as ideal conditions for a mushroom. There are desert strains of mushrooms. So what you have are mushrooms that 'like' these conditions, more so than an anomaly. There are fungicides on the market that can be applied. One home remedy is to sprinkle cornmeal on your lawn. The theory is that it attracts a type of trichoderma fungi that is a natural disease of other mushrooms. Without knowing the exact type of mushrooms that you have, it would be best to have them identified before you choose any specific treatment. Contact your local Cooperative Extension Office and ask to speak with a Master gardener...the best source for local advice. Good luck. note* wild mushroom identification with a good field guide can be a challenging and rewarding hobby.
