I've read it many times throughout school, and I didn't dislike the book, but don't think it's as amazing as many people make it out to be. I like how the story is honest, Holden has this crazy complex where he thinks he's better than everyone else because they're all 'phony', but it's pretty much obvious that he really despises himself, probably because he lacks the ability to 'join the crowd'. Everybody who reads this book can relate to Holden's character to some degree. It does show the life of an emotionally damaged young man, who has suffered problems in his past without support and as a result has a negatively outlook on the world.

Regardless of people's opinions on the book, I feel like it's just one of those American classics you have to read, and probably will at some point during your education.

no, but i've read "The Perks of Being a Wallflower" which is a modern day version of "Catcher in the Rye" and it is very good. I suggest everyone read that book some point in their life.

Definitely a good insight to the inner workings of mental illness and detached parenting. I liked it.

I started reading it and had to give it up as too alien. I think only males can understand it.

I read it a long time ago and I thought it was kind of stupid.
I have no clue why it's a favorite among serial killers.
