When a new show comes on tv or for instance when they have an award show or something, the next day or so they say for example "There were 2.1 million viewers last night." -----How do they know how many people were watching? How does that work?

They have ratings boxes attached to televisions that gives them a sample of the viewing public and they multiply that percentage by the total numbers of viewers in the market to come up with an approximate number of viewers for a show at a given time on a given day.

They do it by percentages. Maybe ten people out of one hundred people surveyed in California said they watched the show, that's ten percent. Divide that by the population of California, and you get an estimate of how many people watched the show in that state. Do that same calculation in every state and you have the number of viewers for that show !!!

Because of the Nielsen Ratings, there are certain families that have been picked that have Nielsen boxes connected to their television sets. What they watch is collected through those boxes and the data is sent to the big dawgs! Different kinds of families are chosen from all cultures and lifestyles and are used to represent that percent of our population. Of course the families also choose to be involved.

I was wondering the same thing. Because they determine whether a show stays on from its ratings. I'm guessing it has to do with satellite signals showing who and how many is tuned into what. There is probably a department that strictly does this stuff.
