A rug is a small or large piece of carpet that covers a specific area- Carpet is from wall to wall. At least that's how i see it.

Well, this question isn't correct because they are two seperate things, sorry if I sound uppy. I carpet is when the entire floor is covered by a one colored piece that is stapled to your floor. A rug is just something you throw on the floor, like something the guests wipe their feet on when they come in, or just for decoration. And it usually has some type of design on it...

A rug covers a much smaller area ("throw rug") and can be moved around
