Medieval Gothic Architecture.....I have some info on it already but you might know something I don't. Anything about the time period having to do with Gothic cathedrals or about specific churches (like Notre Dame) would be helpful....thanks!

it is a distinct time period around the 1500's or so in which buildings were made massive-aka the Notre Dame. lots of arches, colums-different styles were used-as well as stained glass to brighten up the building. St. Dennis in France, as well as the Notre Dame were built in this period: big, massive, lots of details involved in carving, gargoils were big, with lots of stained glass, a lot of columns, arches and cupolas used all at once. it was big in Europe but came to an end.

Gothic architecture is a style of architecture, particularly associated with cathedrals and other churches, which flourished in Europe during the high and late medieval period. Beginning in 12th century France, it was known as "the French Style" during the period, with the term Gothic first appearing in the Reformation era as a stylistic insult.

It was succeeded by Renaissance architecture beginning in Florence in the 15th century.

A series of Gothic revivals began in mid-18th century England, spread through 19th century Europe and continued, largely for ecclesiastical and university structures, into the 20th century.

Gothic architecture consists of the pointed arches, high vaulted ceilings, thinner walls, flying buttresses, and stained glass windows. Lots of 'em.

Those are the main features of Gothic Architecture; however it wasn't so medieval as it was from the Renaissance, as that's when it really bloomed.

John Ruskin's 'The Nature of Gothic' is a masterwork on this subject. Try a search on Google for 'Ruskin, Nature of Gothic' or, if that doesn't help, buy 'John Ruskin, Unto This Last and Other Writings' on Amazon.
I promise, you won't be disappointed.
