Mathematics requires logical thinking to a large degree. In order to interpret and defend your opinions you must be able to argue logically. This means you cannot rely on just what you think is true.

I have not read the article so I can't have any opinions per say on the article but to your question of how mathmatics helps is simple because it makes you think logically. Not illogically. For example with regard to fallacy it is illogical to say that since it snows every Christmas and today it is snowing it must therefore be Christmas. Hope that helped.

I haven't read the article (and have no intention of doing so). But, in general, anything that can be backed up with numbers is a better argument, even if the numbers aren't 100% reliable. People have it rooted in their sub-concious that numbers don't lie. Has anybody else heard of the old saying, "figures don't lie, but liars figure"?

I suppose that statistics are what you are talking about. Mathematics and statistics are completely different; in fact, the only thing in common is that they both refer to the comparison of numbers. Using statistics to prove your point is effective and cannot be denied. However, look up the source of the statistic, and tell people that.

For instance, instead of saying "organic food is proven better for you", say "USDA studies show that ..." beforehand.
