go into system, and hardware settings. uninstall anything under sound and have windows look for your hardware again. probably just a broken driver.

Right click "My Computer" and select properties. Go to the harware tab and select device manager. There is a good chance that under sound card, there will be a little yellow question mark by the driver. That means that windows can detect the sound card, but does not have the appropriate driver to install it.
1. The easy way, is right click on that question mark, and select update driver. Make sure to select automatically download and click continue. This SHOULD work.
2. If that doesn't work, then the only answer is to go to the manufacter's site and download the driver for that sound card. This may mean you will have to open up the computer and take a look at the company and the model number of the sound card.

RIGHT CLICK the MY COMPUTER icon. Select PROPERTIES. For most versions of Windows, click the tab marked DEVICE MANAGER. (For Windows XP, click the tab marked HARDWARE, and then the button marked DEVICE MANAGER.)
Scroll down the list and locate SOUND, VIDEO AND GAME CONTROLLERS. Click the plus (+) sign next to it. Some new lines of text will appear just below it. Click on any of the lines that say AUDIO or SOUND, and click DELETE on your keyboard.
The computer will ask if you're sure you want to send it to the recycle bin - click YES.
Restart your computer. It will locate the sound card and reinstall it.
