What kind of fish is best for me? I am only 12 years old, in school, but seem to have enough time on my hands to take care of pets. Are beta fishies good? What else are good?

I think a beta would be a great first fish. Remember the males have to be kept in a tank by themselves. There are so many different colors to choose from. Enjoy!

Betas die easily, are dirty, and mean. They are gross!
If you are 12 yrs. then you need a happy tank. Start with some "Neon's" (you can even get a black light for your tank to watch them glow). If you are just gonna use a single bowl fish then get a Goldfish. They come in many kinds. Please have fun decorating your bowl/tank. It's quite fun and becomes an educational hobby as you grow into bigger tanks. Maybe someday you can even make a salt water tank. Find a fish store or Pet Smart. Do not buy fish from Walmart or stores like that. They have unhealthy, and diseased fish. Walmart does sometimes have cute aquarium/bowl decorations. Good luck and stay away from those Betas or other mean fish.

Betas in the wild, due to the natural cycles there, live only one year -- two at the most. This is the case with many small fishes and is why people often do not have much success with their aquariums. Nature is against you. However, even in small bowls well cared for Betas may live 3-5 years! The trick is to maintain the water temperatures very evenly and to not introduce any contaminates, change the water frequently and carefully, and not overfeed.

Betas are easy and don't require much maintenance. I think this is a good fish for a 12 year old.You could keep it in a little bowl of some sort without having to go out and by a tank and filter and all that other stuff.

Hey there!
Bettas are awesome fish- absolutely AWESOME!!! They don't need a pump filter, I just kept mine in a big gallon jar with some gravel and a plastic plant! LOL!! and I gave him a couple of food pellets a day, and he lived for about 4 years. That's pretty old for one of these guys.
I also like the plain old goldfish. i know it might sound boring, but these are very simple fish to take care of, I have a goldfish I have had for over 5 years, and a --I can't spell this-- plocostomous-- you know, an algae eater, they can live together , he will need a pump but can go for a little while without one if your power goes out. (I had to go through the Hurricane katrina without power for a couple of weeks and my fish did great.)
There are all kinds of goldfish out there, too. The fish I mentioned are all very inexpensive, undemanding and are super easy to care for. I also feed my goldfish small pieces(SMALL) of bread and lettuce.
Hope this gave you some ideas.LOL!!

what's your budget?
coz the equipments can costs heaps depending on the fishes.

the tough fishies like your fighting fish, kois and goldies are easy to take care of coz they require little attention. But since you said you've got time, how about those bigger varieties?

ask your local pet stores for something that does not get sick easily and will not eat/fight with other fishes (if you are planning to have more than one fish per tank). Visit a variety of pet stores so you can get the best advice and prices. If possible bring along an adult as they can help you to negociate for a better price on the fishies and equipments.

A betta is a good fish to start with. They are cheap, and don't need a pricey tank like most fish. The key is to keep the water clean, the temp stable, and don't over feed. In containers less than 2.5 gallons you'll need to change the water every 4 days. As always read up on betta talk before you buy a betta.

Beta fishes are the easiest animals to take care of, and they are pretty cheap, but they don't last a long time. Goldfish last for years if cared for properly, but their tank/bowls require a lot of cleaning

your choice
