A dear friend of mine is in hospital recovering from having her bladder removed. Because she wasn't eligable for a transplant for various reasons, I believe she will be fitted with a urine bag. Can anyone out there kindly go through the surgery procedure in laymans language with me and explain how this bag will be used, changed etc. I would like to be furnished with as much knowledge as pos' as I shall be taking care of her for short periods after her discharge. I am sure I shall be informed by medical staff on the correct procedure regarding changing and hygiene etc. but in case they neglect to tell me everything it would be an enormous help to have some insight into my friend's condition and how best I can help her to help herself, as she is bound to be apprehensive for the first few weeks at least. Thank you in anticipation of a reply.

My father had his bladder removed due to cancer many years ago. I have never personally assisted him with changing the "applicance", so I'm not sure I can tell you anything that the medical personnel cannot. I just wanted to post a note of encouragement, however, because I DO know that, ever since he learned how to do it, he has had very little inconvenience and leads a very normal life. Nobody even knows that he has it, and he can use normal restroom facilities, etc.

Not much info I know, but I hope it helps at least a little. Best of luck to your friend. I'm sure she'll do fine !
